ASAP Explore Instructor (Learning Assistant)
Starting in September 2026. This "PART-TIME" Position is initially for one years.
Responsibilities
Introduction:
ASAP Explorers is a specialized after-school program at the International School of Stuttgart designed to provide children with engaging, hands-on opportunities to explore STEAM – Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths.
Unlike ASAP classes that focus on one specific activity throughout the semester, ASAP Explorers offers a different STEAM focus each day:
Science Monday • Technology Tuesday • Engineering Wednesday
• Art Thursday • Maths Friday
Program Hours
ASAP Explorers operates in one-hour blocks.
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday = 15:30 - 17:30 p.m. (2h)
Wednesday = 12:30 - 17:30 p.m. (5h)
As the ASAP Explorers Instructor, you will be responsible for leading children through a varied program of hands-on STEAM experiences.
The emphasis of ASAP Explorers is on learning through doing. The instructor should create opportunities for children to ask questions, test ideas, make things, experiment, solve problems and discover new skills while having fun.
The instructor will work within the overall ASAP Explorers program structure while adapting activities to the age, interests and abilities of the children attending.
Above all, the instructor is responsible for creating a safe, inclusive, positive and enjoyable after-school environment in which every child feels welcome and encouraged to participate.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan, prepare and lead engaging, age-appropriate STEAM activities in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths.
- Provide practical, hands-on experiences that encourage children to explore, create, experiment, build and problem-solve.
- Adapt activities to suit the age, abilities and interests of the children attending.
- Adapt activities and group organization according to attendance and the number of children participating in each block.
- Create a positive environment where children feel comfortable trying new things, making mistakes and developing their own ideas.
- Encourage curiosity, creativity, teamwork and independent thinking.
- Supervise and support children throughout their time in ASAP Explorers, including activities, transitions and breaks.
- Ensure the physical and emotional wellbeing, safety and inclusion of all participating children.
- Maintain appropriate behaviour expectations and positive group management.
- Ensure that children are correctly signed in and out of ASAP Explorers using the appropriate attendance procedures.
- Closely monitor attendance and maintain awareness of which children are attending each individual block.
- Support safe and organized transitions between ASAP Explorers, other after-school activities and collection.
- Work collaboratively with the Beyond the Classroom Coordinator, school staff and other after-school program staff to support the smooth flow of children throughout the afternoon.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with parents when relevant information or issues arise during a child's time in ASAP Explorers.
- Prepare activity spaces and equipment before sessions and ensure spaces are organised and appropriately left at the conclusion of the program.
- Follow International School of Stuttgart safeguarding, child-protection, health and safety procedures.
- Support the overall ASAP program and contribute to a positive, flexible and collaborative after-school environment.
Qualifications
Experience in working within an educational environment would be advantageous, and an attitude that promotes international-mindedness is essential. A qualification as an Erzieher/in would be an advantage.
The successful candidate also:
- Experience working with children in a school, childcare, after-school, camp or extracurricular setting.
- Experience with STEAM/STEM, inquiry-based, project-based or hands-on learning is desirable.
- Confidence in independently leading groups of children with strong group management and communication skills.
- Enthusiastic, reliable, organized, creative and adaptable, with a willingness to actively engage with children.
- Ability to work collaboratively in an international and multilingual school environment.
- Commitment to child protection, safeguarding and the physical and emotional wellbeing of children.
- Valid German work permit or eligibility to work in Germany and health insurance coverage.
- CPR and First Aid certification or willingness to obtain it.
A successful ASAP Explorers Instructor is someone who can take an idea and turn it into an engaging experience — whether that means conducting an experiment, building a bridge, creating something artistic, solving a challenge, exploring technology or discovering how maths appears in everyday life.
