Position Overview
The MUN Director provides strategic leadership and comprehensive management for the school’s Model United Nations program, which includes the flagship four-day in-house conference, MUNISS, the Mini MUN Conference (MUN Day) for Grades 6–10, multiple external conferences, and a thriving MUN Club. The Director oversees all aspects of planning, budgeting, logistics, and communication while mentoring a team of 18 or more student leaders. This role ensures that all activities reflect the school’s values of excellence, integrity, and global citizenship, fostering student development in diplomacy, leadership, collaboration and self-directed learning.
Responsibilities
- Conference Leadership (MUNISS): Oversee the planning, coordination, and deliverance of the school’s four-day in-house Model United Nations conference, MUNISS, hosting approximately 400 participants. Oversee scheduling, logistics, delegate registration, committee operations, communications, and event execution to ensure a professional and enriching experience in partnership with student-led team.
- Event and Vendor Coordination: Liaise with caterers to organize meals and refreshments throughout the conference and collaborate with local businesses and venues to host the official MUNISS social event, ensuring high standards of quality, safety, and student experience.
- Keynote Speaker Procurement: In collaboration with student leaders- identify, invite, and coordinate keynote speakers for MUNISS, securing high-profile and inspirational figures such as Members of the European Parliament or the UN, national government ministers, and leaders of international development and aid organizations to address conference participants.
- Sponsorship and Partnerships: Oversee procurement of sponsorships and partnerships from local businesses, universities, hotels and other organizations to support MUNISS operations and events. Build and maintain strong community relationships that contribute to the success and visibility of the program.
- Mini MUN Conference (MUN Day, Grades 6–10): Design, plan, and oversee the Mini MUN Conference, a one-day in-house event introducing younger students to MUN-style debate and research. Create planning documents for teachers and students, develop country matrices, and facilitate preparation during advisory sessions. Oversee the full event day, ensuring smooth operations, engagement, and meaningful learning outcomes.
- Inter-Campus Collaboration: Liaise with the Sindelfingen campus to coordinate participation in both MUNISS and MUN Day, supporting cross-campus communication, logistics, and student involvement to strengthen collaboration across the school community.
- Student Leadership and Mentorship: Recruit, train, and mentor a team of 18+ student executives. Lead weekly MUN planning meetings during lunch, maintain oversight of at least 10 concurrent work chats corresponding to different MUNISS planning departments (e.g., logistics, finance, communications, press, and delegate affairs), and promote teamwork, accountability, and student initiative.
- Reflective Practice and Leadership Transition: Develop and oversee a reflective process for student leaders to engage thoughtfully with feedback from conferences and MUN activities. Guide students in writing annual reflections on their learning and leadership growth, and facilitate handover meetings between outgoing and incoming leaders to ensure smooth transitions, continuity, and institutional memory.
- Marketing and Communications Oversight: Oversee all marketing, promotion, and social media activity related to MUNISS and the MUN program. Work closely with the Marketing Team to ensure that all communications and digital tools present the school and its students in a professional, accurate, and engaging light, reflecting both the educational purpose and the dynamic spirit of MUN.
- Club Oversight: Direct weekly MUN Club meetings during lunch, guiding students in research, debate, diplomacy, and international relations. Foster an inclusive and collaborative environment that encourages participation and confidence.
- Trip Coordination: Plan and lead at least two external MUN trips per year, managing all logistics, budgeting, permissions, risk assessments, and student supervision. Conduct trip preparation meetings prior to each event to ensure delegates are well prepared and confident.
- Budgeting and Financial Management: Manage an annual MUNISS budget of approximately €30,000, ensuring responsible allocation of funds, transparent accounting, and adherence to school financial policies.
- Privacy, Marketing, and Data Protection: Oversee data collection, registration systems, and communication channels in compliance with privacy and safeguarding standards. Work in partnership with the Data Protection Officer and Marketing Team to ensure secure handling of participant data, appropriate media use, and ethical program representation.
- Operational Management: Coordinate the daily operations of the MUN program, aligning planning, logistics, and communication among student leaders, faculty, and administration.
- Community and Professional Engagement: Serve as the primary liaison between the MUN program, school leadership, parents, and external partners. Represent the school’s MUN initiatives in regional and international networks to enhance visibility and collaboration.
Qualifications and Attributes:
- Extensive experience in Model United Nations, debate, or global education programs.
- Proven ability to manage large-scale events and lead diverse student teams effectively.
- Strong financial management skills, including oversight of budgets of approximately €30,000.
- Excellent organizational, mentoring, and communication skills.
- Understanding safeguarding, privacy, and data protection practices, working collaboratively with institutional data officers and marketing teams.
- Skilled in vendor management, partnership coordination, and event logistics.
- Commitment to fostering global awareness, diplomacy, and experiential learning across grade levels and campuses.
Required attendance at
- Weekly MUN Planning Meetings (1 lunchtime per week).
- Weekly MUN Club Meetings, can also be supervised by students or a B-role position (1 lunchtime per week).
- Trip Preparation Meetings as needed prior to external conferences.
- MUNISS (4 full days), MUNISS planning (at least 1, sometimes 2 weekends prior to the conference, usually both Saturday and Sunday) the Mini MUN Conference (1 full day plus preparation afternoon the day before the conference from 15:30-17:30), and two external MUN trips annually.
- The nature of the role requires significant evening and weekend supervision, as the Director must actively monitor, read, and respond to at least 10 concurrent departmental work chats where student planning occurs.
- The Director is expected to provide ongoing communication and guidance after school hours, including during weekends, to support student leadership, maintain momentum, and ensure timely decision-making throughout the MUN cycle.
